The secret gay life of one of the greatest female athletes in history
She succeeded in multiple sports. She won two gold medals and a silver at the 1932 Olympics. She excelled at basketball, baseball, track and field, swimming, bowling, tennis and, most famously, golf. She helped found the Ladies Professional Golf Association and became one of the most celebrated athletes in America. She was also something else: a woman who loved another woman at a time when acknowledging that love could destroy a career.

"She was the voluptuous embodiment of empathy," her friend and 9 to 5 costar Jane Fonda said today upon hearing of her death, adding "To her gay and trans fans, I want you to know that she loved you." Parton was so kind she couldn't be a judge on American Idol, explaining, “If you make a mistake, it’s best that you pick it up and it turns into something positive. Sometimes the best part of my show is when I mess up and people know I’m human. They see how you’re gonna get out of it, and you’re right there in the spotlight. You have to deal with it. Same with life, I don’t punish myself for [making mistakes].”
