A day in the life of an acquisitions manager
What's an acquisitions manager? At my workplace (in education) that means i oversee a large department's purchasing. This includes things like: monitoring several budget lines; negotiating with vendors and submitting cases when needed; performing first review of license agreements; and managing access and troubleshooting for various resources and systems.
Today's tasks:
- Reviewed suggested book purchases. These are auto-generated from a vendor, so i'm checking for relevance to our needs and then filing into lists by subject. Those lists will be used for placing orders later in the year.
- Contacted a student to assist with an access problem.
- Worked on a contract renewal.
- Placed an order for requested items.
- Cancelled a subscription resource. Notified all the relevant people. Added notes in the appropriate internal and external places.
- Registered for an online conference.
- Worked on tasks for a large annual event held by my parent department.
- Read parent organization's acceptable use standard for AI (as part of departmental policy committee work).
- Watched a recorded webinar on criticism of AI.
(this post brought to you by needing some extrinsic motivation on a wfh day when my brain wans't cooperating)
